Spray-Drying Agglomeration

The fluidised-bed spray-drying agglomeration is an innovative method to produce free-flowing, dust-free agglomerates with excellent instant properties from a slurry. It is a combined process of spray granulation and agglomeration, i.e. both process steps take place simultaneously in one plant.

Solid containing liquids (suspensions, solutions, emulsions etc.) are atomised by the nozzle systems integrated in the fluidised bed plant. Part of the liquid evaporates and spray-dried granulation seeds are produced. These swirled particles are continuously sprinkled with the solid containing liquid. Liquid and solid bridges are formed between the individual particles and make the agglomerates grow while spraying is continued. An external carrier material such as maltodextrin or dextrose is often continuously dosed into the plant and sprayed with solid containing liquid. The liquid dries on the carrier material and loads it with the active substance. A dust-free, easy flowing agglomerate of excellent solubility is formed.

Spray drying agglomeration can be operated in continuous and in batch-wise processing with several products for many different applications. By varying the plant- and process parameters, the targeted final product properties (e.g. particle size distribution, bulk density or residual moisture) can be individually and optimally adjusted.

Example of application: Solidification of active substances

An enzyme ferment is sprayed onto a carrier and dried gently. The enzyme activity is maintained. The final active substance granules are free-flowing and can be added precisely acc. to recipe to the final mixture.

Further applications:

Stabilisation of liquid active substances, combination of liquid and solid raw materials, production of dehydrated food.
